What are your programs all about?
We are about breaking down stereotypes, providing a safe space for people of all
backgrounds, promoting tolerance, and creating positive social change in our community.
What happens at your programs?
All programs include instrument instruction, band formation, collaborative songwriting,
and participation in various workshops such as Music Herstory, Self defense, Zine
making, Screen printing, Image & Identity, and more. Each program culminates in a
showcase performance at a live venue, attended by hundreds of adoring fans.
Do you need to know how to play an instrument to come?
NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY and we provide instruments for all
participants. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own equipment and
accessories if you have them.
Do you offer financial aid?
YES! Our financial aid is based on need. We try very hard to make sure camp is
accessible to all campers! Please visit our programs section to download our financial aid form.
Do I have to like rock music?
NO! Rock is in our name, but we support all the ways girls* want to “rock” — whatever
that means to them! We teach, listen to, and love all sorts of music from rock to hiphop,
jazz to folk, pop to punk!
Why girls* only?
We want to eradicate the limiting myths about music and gender. Through lessons,
mentorship, positive examples, and the shared experiences of the staff and volunteers,
GR!R demonstrates that every genre of music, from the heaviest to the most delicate, and
every technical job and creative endeavor in the music industry is available to any girl*or woman who wants to explore it. We believe that by teaching these things, we can help
girls* develop — musically, mentally, and emotionally — their own ideas of who and what
they want to be. The enormous amount of community support given to campers at Girls
Rock! Rochester affords them a unique opportunity to express themselves in any way
*Girls Rock! Rochester welcomes campers who self-identify as female, trans
or gender non-conforming.
Do you offer private lessons?
Girls Rock! Rochester does not offer private lessons. However, we can point you in the
direction of some amazing instructors that have been with us through the years.
Are camper bands available to perform at my event?
We do not manage camper bands and cannot recommend any of our campers for performances.
What does it cost?
Summer Camp costs $250. We offer financial aid for all programs on a needs basis, and
no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. GR!R is committed to providing 50% of our campers financial aid.
What is your refund policy?
We follow the schedule outlined below when refunding tuition paid toward program attendance.
Time until the program’s first day:
Girls Rock!: 0%
Girls Rock!: 25%

How can I volunteer?
Girls Rock! Rochester relies on volunteers to carry out all of our programs. In addition to summer camp positions, we have many other volunteer opportunities year round. We
also have volunteer positions open for all gender identities.
Do I have to have musical experience to volunteer?
No. We have many volunteer positions that do not require musical experience. You can
lead a workshop, manage a band, be a roadie, work in the kitchen, help out in the office,
and much more! Many positions are flexible and can work with your schedule.
Are you a local or national organization?
We are an independent 501(c)(3) organization. We are affiliated with the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, an international coalition of programs with the common mission of empowering girls through music.
