In 2011 Girls Rock! Rochester was founded by women who, inspired by other Girls Rock! camps across the country, believed a rock camp for girls would thrive and become a beneficial asset to their community in Rochester. Together we established a volunteer-run organization offering a camp that is designed to empower girls through rock music. In early 2012, Girls Rock! Rochester held its first fundraising event with BRAWL (Broad’s Regional Arm Wrestling League) and raised over $1,000 in support for camp.
Our inaugural camp session was held in July of 2012. Girls Rock! Rochester runs on a sliding scale tuition base and provides financial aid for anyone who needs it. Due to the amazing support we received from grassroots fundraising efforts and the loving Rochester community, Girls Rock! Rochester was able to afford 75% of its campers during the session with financial aid, fulfilling 100% of need.
In five days, three bands were formed, each writing an original song and performing it at the end of the week for the first Girls Rock! Rochester summer showcase at a packed music cafe in Rochester. In March 2013, Girls Rock! Rochester sent three staff members to the mountains of northern Georgia where they attended the Girls Rock Camp Alliance annual conference. Girls Rock Camp organizers and 44 camps total from all over the world (including Sweden, Iceland, Austria, and Canada) got together for networking, skill sharing, and movement building.
Girls Rock! Rochester is run by a team of musicians, teachers, counselors, and other inspiring women of various professions who seek to empower young girls in their community and the surrounding Rochester areas. Girls Rock! Rochester hopes that through this camp they will be able to reach out to all of the strong and talented women in the area, uniting them for this cause as well as other women-empowering endeavors within the community.
