Girls Rock! Camp

A week-long day-camp where campers receive instruction on the instrument of their choice, attend workshops, form a band with new friends, write an original song together, and perform in a showcase at a local venue. Camp will return in 2025!

Our Mission

We foster creativity while building a supportive community of peers and mentors, while developing life and leadership skills to effect positive social change.

Our Commitment

In addition to the fundamentals of making music, our programs include workshops to help youth develop skills and resources for: critical thinking, empathy, DIY culture, media literacy, and conflict resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Who should apply?

Girls, transgender, and gender non-binary youth between the ages of 8-16 by the start of camp may apply. Girls Rock! Rochester supports the liberation of all people who experience gender based oppression. If you feel like this space is for you, it likely is. Prior music experience is not required!

How much does it cost?

Tuition for week-long youth camps is $375.

We realize that not everyone can afford our suggested fees. To ensure camps are financially accessible, we use a sliding scale of $0-$375 to include a range of tuition amounts.

GR!R operates with very limited resources, and we rely heavily on donations and support from the community to sustain our programs.

We ask those who can afford to pay full price to do so.

Please consider your family income, resources, and dependents in the household when determining your tuition amount. The application form includes a section where you can indicate your request to apply for financial aid.

This process is honor-based and confidential. We do not require any supporting documentation for consideration, so we expect you to be honest in your assessment and statement of financial need.

What time does camp start and end?

Girls Rock! Camp is a day camp, the hours are 9am – 5pm.

What instrument can I play at Girls Rock! Camp?

Campers choose which instrument to learn:
guitar, bass, vocals, drums, or keyboard.

Please indicate first and second choice of instrument on the application.

Due to the need to acquire gear in advance, you cannot change your selection after you send in your application, and you cannot change instruments during the program.

I already know how to play an instrument — is GR!R for me?

Yes! Girls Rock! Camp is for youth of all musical abilities.

I’ve never played an instrument before — is GR!R for me?

Yes! You will have plenty of instruction in a non-judgemental and supportive environment.

Do I need to bring my own instrument?

No. All instruments will be provided at camp.

But if you have your own guitar or bass, you may bring it. Please note that Girls Rock! Rochester, Inc. does not accept liability for personal instruments.

What is the selection process?

Campers are selected by a committee seeking to establish a balanced and diverse camp population in relation to instrument, age, previous musical experience, economic status, geography and community. Campers are NOT selected on a first-come, first-serve basis and applying for camp does not guarantee admission. Your family's ability to pay will not affect your child's chance of admission to camp. GR!R strives to make camp accessible and available to all but due to space and resource limitations we cannot accept all applicants. Traditionally, some applicants may be placed on a waitlist and notified of acceptance when space becomes available.

GR!R's goal is to have the registration process as inclusive and as fair as possible. Many factors are considered in this process. We will hold multiple rounds of application review between April and June in an effort to help families plan their summers and still extend the opportunity to as many young people as possible. Final notifications about acceptance will be given by June 5th.

Thank you for your interest in GR!R's camp programs! Registration for GR!R programs (Girls Rock Camp and Pride Rock Camp) typically opens in April. If you have any questions about camper registration, please do not hesitate to contact our Program Director at info@girlsrockrochester.org.
